Texas Personal Auto Insurance FAQ

These questions are written in plain language to answer the kinds of questions Texas drivers commonly ask when shopping for, using, or trying to understand personal auto insurance.

Auto Insurance Basics

What car insurance is required in Texas?

Texas drivers must be able to pay for accidents they cause. Most people meet this requirement by carrying liability insurance. The minimum liability limits are 30/60/25: $30,000 for bodily injury to one person, $60,000 total bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage per accident.

What does 30/60/25 mean in Texas auto insurance?

The numbers describe the maximum liability amounts a minimum-limits policy will pay for a covered accident: $30,000 for bodily injury to one person, up to $60,000 for bodily injury to all people injured in the accident, and $25,000 for damage to other people’s property.

Are Texas minimum auto insurance limits enough?

They satisfy the minimum legal requirement, but they may not be enough for a serious accident. Medical bills, lost income, legal expenses, and the cost of newer vehicles can exceed minimum limits quickly. Higher liability limits can provide more protection for your income and assets.

What does liability car insurance cover?

Liability insurance generally pays for covered bodily injury and property damage you are legally responsible for causing to others in an auto accident, up to your policy limits. It does not normally pay to repair your own vehicle.

What does “full coverage” car insurance mean?

“Full coverage” is an informal term, not a specific insurance policy. People usually mean a policy that includes liability plus collision and comprehensive coverage, but the phrase does not mean every possible loss is covered. Limits, deductibles, exclusions, PIP, UM/UIM, rental reimbursement, towing, and other options still matter.

What is the difference between liability and full coverage?

Liability primarily protects against covered injuries and property damage you cause to others. What people call full coverage usually adds collision and comprehensive coverage for your own vehicle. There can still be important gaps, limits, and optional coverages.

Do I need collision and comprehensive insurance in Texas?

Texas law does not generally require collision and comprehensive coverage, but a lender or leasing company usually requires them while it has a financial interest in the vehicle. Even without a loan, you may want them if replacing or repairing your vehicle out of pocket would be difficult.

What is a car insurance deductible?

A deductible is the amount you are responsible for on certain covered claims before the insurer pays its portion. Liability coverage generally does not work with a deductible, while collision and comprehensive commonly do.

Should I choose a $500 or $1,000 auto insurance deductible?

A higher deductible can reduce premium, but it increases what you must pay after a covered loss. Choose an amount you could comfortably afford on short notice. Compare the premium savings with the additional risk you would keep.

Why Car Insurance Costs So Much

Why is car insurance so expensive in Texas?

Texas auto premiums reflect many factors, including accident frequency and severity, repair and replacement costs, medical costs, theft, weather losses, litigation and claim costs, where vehicles are kept, and each insurer’s loss experience. Your own driving record, claims history, vehicle, mileage, age, and other rating factors also matter.

Why did my car insurance go up?

Your rate can increase because of tickets or accidents, changes in your vehicle or drivers, changes in mileage or location, loss of discounts, claims history, insurer rate changes, or rising repair and claim costs. Your premium can increase even when nothing obvious changed on your end.

Why did my car insurance go up even though I had no accidents or tickets?

Insurance companies price for both your individual risk and the overall cost of claims. If vehicle repairs, medical costs, theft, catastrophe losses, or an insurer’s overall losses increase, rates can rise for claim-free drivers too.

Why is my car insurance higher after buying a newer car?

Newer vehicles can cost more to repair or replace and may contain expensive cameras, sensors, headlights, body panels, and safety technology. The specific vehicle’s claim history and repair costs can affect comprehensive and collision premiums.

Why is car insurance more expensive in some Texas ZIP codes?

Where a vehicle is kept can affect rates because accident frequency, theft, vandalism, traffic density, weather exposure, and claim costs differ by area. Rates can vary even between nearby ZIP codes.

Does my credit affect my car insurance rate in Texas?

Some Texas insurers use credit-based insurance information as one factor in pricing, subject to Texas law. It is not the same thing as simply using your credit score by itself, and insurers consider other rating factors as well.

Do speeding tickets make car insurance go up?

They can. Insurers commonly consider driving records when underwriting and pricing policies. The impact depends on the violation, your overall record, the insurer, and how long ago the ticket occurred.

How long does an accident affect my car insurance rate?

There is no single period that applies to every insurer and situation. Companies use their own underwriting and rating rules within Texas law, and the effect can change as an accident gets older. Ask your agent when a particular incident will stop affecting the companies being quoted.

How can I lower my car insurance premium in Texas?

Shop multiple insurers, review liability and optional coverages, compare deductible choices, verify mileage and driver information, ask about available discounts, consider bundling when it makes sense, and maintain a good driving record. Avoid reducing important coverage simply to reach a target price without understanding the added risk.

Is it cheaper to pay car insurance every six months instead of monthly?

It can be. Some insurers offer a paid-in-full discount or charge installment fees for monthly payments. Compare the total six-month cost rather than only the monthly payment.

Does bundling home and auto insurance save money?

Often, but not always. Multi-policy discounts can be significant, yet two separate insurers can sometimes produce a better overall combination of price and coverage. Compare the total household cost.

Collision, Comprehensive, and Damage to Your Car

What does collision insurance cover?

Collision coverage generally pays for covered damage to your vehicle caused by impact with another vehicle or object, or by overturning, subject to your deductible and policy terms.

What does comprehensive car insurance cover?

Comprehensive, sometimes called other-than-collision coverage, generally covers specified non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism, hail, falling objects, fire, flood, and contact with an animal, subject to the policy and deductible.

Does car insurance cover hail damage in Texas?

Comprehensive coverage generally can cover hail damage to your insured vehicle, subject to your deductible and policy terms. Liability-only coverage does not pay for hail damage to your own car.

Does car insurance cover flood damage to my car?

Comprehensive coverage generally can cover vehicle damage from flooding, subject to the policy and deductible. This is different from homeowners insurance, which generally excludes rising-water flood damage to the home.

Does car insurance cover hitting a deer?

Contact with a deer or other animal is generally handled under comprehensive coverage rather than collision, subject to policy terms and your deductible.

Does car insurance cover a cracked windshield?

Glass damage is commonly handled under comprehensive coverage. Whether a deductible applies, whether repair is available, and whether special glass coverage exists depends on the policy and insurer.

Does car insurance cover theft?

Comprehensive coverage generally can cover theft of an insured vehicle, subject to the policy, deductible, and claim investigation. Liability-only insurance does not pay to replace your stolen car.

Does car insurance cover vandalism?

Comprehensive coverage generally can cover vandalism to an insured vehicle, subject to the deductible and policy terms.

Does car insurance cover a tree falling on my car?

Damage from a falling tree or branch is generally a comprehensive claim if you carry that coverage, subject to your deductible and policy terms.

PIP, Medical Payments, and Uninsured Drivers

What is PIP insurance in Texas?

Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, can pay covered medical and funeral expenses for you, family members, and passengers after an auto accident and can also provide certain lost-income benefits. Texas auto insurers generally must offer PIP, and it can be rejected in writing.

Do I need PIP if I have health insurance?

Health insurance and PIP do different things. PIP can provide benefits for covered medical expenses and certain lost income after an auto accident regardless of who caused the crash, subject to the policy. Consider your health plan, deductibles, income exposure, and household needs before rejecting it.

What is uninsured motorist coverage in Texas?

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, or UM/UIM, can protect you when a driver who causes an accident has no insurance or not enough insurance. It can provide bodily injury and property damage benefits subject to the policy. Texas insurers generally must offer it, and rejection must be in writing.

Do I really need uninsured motorist coverage in Texas?

It can be valuable because you cannot control whether another driver has adequate insurance. UM/UIM can help when an at-fault driver is uninsured, underinsured, or in qualifying hit-and-run situations. The right limits depend on your circumstances.

Does uninsured motorist coverage have a deductible in Texas?

Texas uninsured/underinsured motorist property-damage coverage commonly has a $250 deductible. Verify the exact terms of your policy.

What happens if someone without insurance hits me in Texas?

Potential sources of recovery can include your uninsured motorist coverage, collision coverage for vehicle damage, or a claim directly against the at-fault driver. Which option is best depends on your policy, injuries, damages, and the circumstances of the accident.

What if the other driver has insurance but not enough to pay my damages?

Underinsured motorist coverage may help when an at-fault driver’s liability limits are insufficient for covered damages, subject to your policy limits and terms.

Does uninsured motorist coverage apply to a hit-and-run?

It can apply in qualifying hit-and-run situations, but policy and Texas requirements matter. Report the accident promptly and document as much information as possible.

Teen Drivers, College Students, and Household Drivers

When do I need to add my teenager to my car insurance in Texas?

Tell your insurer when a household member begins driving or reaches the age at which the company requires disclosure. Texas Department of Insurance guidance advises families to tell the company when someone starts driving or turns 16. Company rules vary, so do not assume a permitted teen is automatically handled correctly.

Is it cheaper to add my teenager to my policy or buy a separate policy?

Adding a young driver to a parent’s policy is often less expensive than buying a separate policy, but pricing varies. Compare both options and make sure the teen, vehicle, and primary-use information are accurate.

Can my college student stay on my car insurance policy?

Often, yes, but the insurer needs to know where the student lives and where the vehicle is primarily kept. If the student attends school away from home without a car, some insurers offer an away-at-school discount. Rules vary by company.

Do I need to tell my insurance company my child took a car to college?

Yes. The location where a vehicle is principally garaged can affect rating and coverage. Tell the insurer when a student takes a vehicle to another city or state.

Can my child stay on my insurance after moving out?

It depends on ownership, residency, vehicle use, and insurer rules. Once an adult child establishes a separate household, a separate policy may be appropriate or required. Discuss the situation with your agent before removing anyone.

Does everyone in my household need to be listed on my auto insurance?

Many insurers require disclosure of household members of driving age and regular vehicle operators. Some may rate, exclude, or otherwise classify drivers differently. Failing to disclose a driver can create billing, underwriting, or claim problems.

What is a named driver exclusion?

A named driver exclusion is an endorsement that excludes a specific person from coverage when driving the insured vehicle. If an excluded driver uses the vehicle and has an accident, the consequences can be severe. Understand an exclusion before agreeing to it.

Will my teen’s grades affect car insurance?

Some insurers offer good-student discounts to eligible young drivers who meet their requirements. Documentation and eligibility rules vary by company.

Buying, Financing, Leasing, and Replacing a Car

Do I need insurance before I buy a car in Texas?

You need to satisfy Texas financial-responsibility requirements to drive legally, and proof of liability insurance is generally required when titling and registering a vehicle. If you finance or lease the car, the lender or lessor will normally require collision and comprehensive coverage as well.

Does my existing car insurance automatically cover a new car?

Many policies provide limited automatic coverage for a newly acquired vehicle, but the rules, coverage, and notification deadlines vary. Contact your agent before or immediately after buying the vehicle rather than relying on an automatic-coverage assumption.

How long do I have to add a new car to my insurance?

There is no universal answer because the notification period and automatic coverage depend on the policy. Notify your agent as soon as possible, ideally before taking possession of the vehicle.

What insurance does a lender require on a financed car?

A lender generally requires collision and comprehensive coverage to protect its financial interest in the vehicle and may impose deductible requirements. The lender may also require that it be listed as a loss payee.

What is gap insurance?

Gap coverage can help with the difference between what you owe on a vehicle loan or lease and the covered value paid after a total loss, subject to the contract. It can be useful when the loan balance exceeds the vehicle’s value.

Do I need gap insurance on a new car?

Gap coverage is most relevant when you owe more than the vehicle is worth. A small down payment, long loan term, rapid depreciation, or rolled-in prior debt can increase that risk. Once the loan balance falls below the vehicle’s value, gap coverage may no longer be useful.

Can I remove full coverage after I pay off my car?

Once there is no lender requiring collision and comprehensive, you can generally choose whether to keep them. Consider the vehicle’s value, your deductible, premium, and whether you could afford to replace the vehicle yourself after a total loss.

What happens if I drop full coverage on a financed vehicle?

You can violate your loan or lease agreement. The lender may purchase lender-placed coverage or take other action permitted by the contract. Lender-placed coverage can be expensive and is primarily designed to protect the lender’s interest.

Borrowing Cars, Rental Cars, and Driving Other Vehicles

Does car insurance follow the car or the driver in Texas?

There is no one-line rule that answers every situation. Auto policies can provide coverage based on the insured vehicle, named insureds, household members, permissive users, and other definitions and exclusions. Always check the actual policy when someone regularly drives a vehicle they do not own.

Can someone else drive my car and be covered by my insurance?

A permissive driver may be covered in many situations, but policy forms and restrictions vary. Regular household drivers should be disclosed to the insurer rather than treated as occasional permissive users.

Am I covered if I borrow someone else’s car?

Your coverage may extend to certain non-owned vehicles, often on an excess basis, but the vehicle owner’s policy and your policy both matter. Regular use, household vehicles, business use, exclusions, and other circumstances can change the answer.

Does my auto insurance cover a rental car?

Your personal auto policy may extend certain coverages to a temporary rental vehicle, but not every expense charged by a rental company is necessarily covered. Before declining the rental company’s protection, verify liability, physical damage, loss-of-use, diminished-value, and deductible issues with your insurer or agent.

What is rental reimbursement coverage?

Rental reimbursement can help pay for temporary transportation while your insured vehicle is being repaired after a covered loss, subject to daily and total limits and policy terms. It generally is not the same as coverage for a rental car you use on vacation.

What is non-owner car insurance?

A non-owner policy can provide certain liability and other coverages for someone who does not own a vehicle but still drives. It may be useful for some people who frequently borrow or rent vehicles or need continuous liability coverage.

Accidents and Claims

What should I do after a car accident in Texas?

Prioritize safety and medical needs, contact law enforcement when appropriate, exchange information, photograph the vehicles and scene if safe, identify witnesses, and report the accident to the appropriate insurer. Avoid admitting fault at the scene; provide accurate facts.

Should I file a claim if the damage is less than my deductible?

If the only applicable coverage is subject to a deductible and the damage is below it, there may be no payment under that coverage. If another person or property is involved, however, liability issues can still exist. Discuss the circumstances with your agent or insurer rather than ignoring a potentially serious accident.

Will my car insurance go up if I file a claim?

It can, depending on the type of claim, fault, driving and claims history, insurer rules, and Texas law. Texas Department of Insurance notes that insurers can raise premiums for many claims and accidents, although some situations are restricted by law.

Will my insurance go up if the accident was not my fault?

Not-at-fault accidents are treated differently from at-fault accidents, and Texas law places limits on how insurers may use certain claims. The exact effect depends on the facts and insurer. Ask your agent or company how the incident is being classified.

Should I call my insurance company if an accident was not my fault?

It is often wise to notify your insurer promptly, especially when injuries, disputed fault, an uninsured driver, or significant damage is involved. Your policy can contain notice requirements, and your own coverage may become important if the other insurer disputes or delays the claim.

What happens if the other driver lies about the accident?

Insurers investigate fault using statements, police reports, photos, vehicle damage, video, witnesses, and other evidence. Document the scene carefully and preserve dashcam footage or other evidence.

What happens if I cause an accident that exceeds my liability limits?

Your insurer generally pays covered damages up to the applicable policy limit. Amounts beyond the limit can potentially become your personal responsibility, which is one reason higher liability limits and, for some households, umbrella insurance can be important.

Can I ask my insurance agent a claim question without filing a claim?

Yes. Texas Department of Insurance states that an insurer cannot charge you more simply because you called the company or agent to ask questions about your policy or the claims process. Be clear that you are asking for guidance if you are not yet reporting a claim.

Total Losses and Vehicle Value

How does an insurance company decide if my car is totaled?

An insurer compares the vehicle’s value and the cost and feasibility of repairs under applicable policy and state rules. Severe damage can make a vehicle a total loss even if it could technically be repaired.

How does insurance determine what my totaled car is worth?

Insurers generally evaluate the vehicle’s actual cash value immediately before the loss using factors such as year, make, model, mileage, options, condition, and comparable vehicles. Review the valuation report for incorrect mileage, trim, options, or condition.

What if I owe more than my totaled car is worth?

The physical-damage settlement is generally based on the covered value of the vehicle, not your loan balance. If you owe more than the settlement, you can remain responsible for the difference unless qualifying gap coverage applies.

Can I keep my car after the insurance company totals it?

In some cases you may be able to retain a totaled vehicle, but the settlement, title status, salvage requirements, and future insurability can be affected. Discuss the consequences before choosing owner-retained salvage.

Does insurance pay sales tax on a totaled vehicle in Texas?

Total-loss settlements can include taxes and certain fees when required under the policy and Texas claim rules. Review the settlement breakdown and ask the adjuster to explain each component.

Using Your Personal Vehicle for Work and Rideshare

Does personal auto insurance cover me if I use my car for work?

It depends on how the vehicle is used. Ordinary commuting is different from using a vehicle in business operations. Delivery, transporting customers, frequent job-site travel, carrying tools or goods, or other business use can require different underwriting or commercial coverage.

Can I use my personal auto policy for DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, or delivery work?

Do not assume a standard personal policy covers rideshare or delivery activity. Personal policies can restrict business, delivery, or transportation-network use. Some insurers offer endorsements, while other situations require different coverage.

Do I need commercial auto insurance for my work truck?

Possibly. Ownership, vehicle type, business use, who drives it, what it carries, and how frequently it is used for work all matter. A truck titled to a business or primarily used in business operations is a strong reason to discuss commercial auto coverage.

What if I drive my personal car to job sites?

Tell your agent how the vehicle is actually used. Occasional commuting and regular business use are not always treated the same. Accurate use information helps avoid a mismatch between the policy and the exposure.

Changing Companies, Lapses, and Special Situations

Can I switch car insurance companies before my policy expires?

Generally, yes. Put the replacement policy in force before cancelling the old one so you do not create a lapse. Also consider cancellation terms, refunds, and whether changing now affects discounts or other policies.

Will I get a refund if I cancel my auto insurance early?

You will generally receive any unearned premium due under the policy and applicable rules, though the exact amount can depend on the policy and payment arrangement. Ask how the cancellation will be calculated before switching.

What happens if my car insurance lapses in Texas?

Driving without required financial responsibility can expose you to legal penalties and major personal financial risk. A lapse can also make future insurance more expensive or limit available insurers. Arrange replacement coverage before the old policy ends.

What is an SR-22 in Texas?

An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility filed by an insurer for certain drivers who are required by the state to prove they carry qualifying liability coverage. It is not itself a separate type of insurance policy.

Can I get car insurance with a bad driving record?

Usually there are still options, although the price and available companies can change. Texas also has the Texas Automobile Insurance Plan Association for eligible drivers who cannot obtain required liability coverage in the voluntary market after qualifying attempts.

Can an insurance company refuse to renew my auto policy?

Insurers can nonrenew policies under circumstances allowed by Texas law and must follow applicable notice requirements. If you receive a nonrenewal notice, start shopping promptly rather than waiting until the expiration date.

Shopping for Texas Auto Insurance

What should I compare when shopping for car insurance?

Compare liability limits, PIP, UM/UIM, collision and comprehensive deductibles, rental reimbursement, towing, exclusions, driver restrictions, optional endorsements, insurer reputation and financial strength, and the total premium. Make sure quotes use the same limits and deductibles.

Is the cheapest car insurance the best car insurance?

Not necessarily. A cheaper policy may have lower liability limits, higher deductibles, fewer optional coverages, driver restrictions, or other differences. Compare what you receive for the premium, not just the price.

How much liability insurance should I carry in Texas?

There is no single limit that is right for everyone. Consider your income, assets, driving exposure, household drivers, vehicles, and the potential cost of a serious accident. Minimum limits are a legal floor, not a recommendation for every household.

Should I carry 100/300 liability limits?

100/300 limits provide substantially more bodily-injury protection than Texas minimum limits, but the right amount depends on your finances and risk. Higher limits can also be important if you want to qualify for a personal umbrella policy.

What information do I need for a Texas car insurance quote?

Expect to provide driver names and dates of birth, driver’s license information, vehicle identification numbers or vehicle details, garaging address, current insurance information, mileage and use, driving history, and the coverages and deductibles you want to compare.

How often should I shop my car insurance?

Reviewing your policy at renewal is a good habit, especially after a major increase, vehicle change, household-driver change, move, ticket or accident aging off, or change in your home insurance. Shopping does not mean you must switch; it tells you whether your current policy remains competitive.

Why should I use an independent insurance agency for auto insurance?

An independent agency can often compare multiple insurers with different rates, underwriting appetites, discounts, and coverage options. That can be especially useful when a household has young drivers, multiple vehicles, claims, tickets, or a home policy to coordinate.

What are the biggest car insurance mistakes Texas drivers make?

Common mistakes include carrying limits that are too low for their financial exposure, assuming “full coverage” means everything is covered, rejecting PIP or UM/UIM without understanding them, failing to disclose household drivers or business use, choosing a deductible they cannot afford, and allowing coverage to lapse.
